Darling Joe,

Please excuse how short and rude my last letter was. I only had a few minutes to write because Mikey and your ma had gone out walking and were late coming back. So I had to go out to find them before going out to work at the Grove. The past several days have been unbelievable. I would never have thought so much could go wrong in such a short amount of time. The only bright spot is that James is coming home soon. The Navy is giving him a discharge because his hands are too bad for him to stay. I have no idea what he'll do when he's home again though if he can't use his hands for anything.

Patrick is coming home on leave next month. Your ma is excited and Susan too of course. I would prefer to have you here, if I'm honest. It isn't fair to be jealous and I try not to be. We all miss you and your brothers in our own ways. Even Peter. Jack Toolan stopped by yesterday to ask if we had any objections to him and Ned Brennan making regular searches of the house when Peter isn't around, just in case he does get up to his old tricks. I told him they were welcome through any time because I won't have any nonsense like that going on here.

I haven't yet broken the news about Francis being missing to your ma. I don't know how. It terrifies me what might happen when she does find out. Will her heart be able to bear it? You remember how bad it was when James got hurt and we knew from the start where he was. Not knowing where Francis is or if he's still alive would be so much worse. I haven't told anyone else about it actually. Except you. Delaying it only makes it harder but I keep hoping another telegram will come to say he's been found and is all right. God. I don't know what I'd do if it was you instead of Francis.

Oh Lord. Mikey has been upstairs showing off his new Lone Ranger coloring book to Beth Harper but I just heard something come tumbling down the stairs and - yes, God help me, it's Mikey taking a fall.

All my love,
