Dear Joe,

I hate to write you with more bad news but you got to know. There was a fire at the Grove on Saturday. It was the worst fire I've ever been at. It was five alarms pretty quick and it took us over an hour to get it out. There's no easy way to say this so I'm just going to say it. Kathleen was in there. Me and Bill found her in the kitchen, just short of the door when we helped run a fresh line in. There were a bunch of other people in there and we got them all out too and straight up to the nearest hospital. Boss told Bill to go with her so he went. The rest of us have been on search detail since and rotating with Engine 12 for that. Joe, I ain't ever seen anything so bad. The whole place is burnt through and there are still bodies buried in there. God alone knows how anyone survived it. I went up to Mass General to relieve Bill and the doctor there says Kat will probably make it but she'll be there for another week at least so they can be sure. She took in a lot of smoke and fumes, he said. Susan and your brother James came up straight off when they heard, because the boss sent word to them, but your ma kept Mikey at home so he didn't have to see. I'm sorry for the news, brother, but we're keeping a guy by her night and day so she ain't alone. James hasn't left the room she's in since he got there either. I hope the Army gets you leave to come back.
