29th September 1942
USS Ulysses S. Grant

Mikey lad,

Hiya, wee man! Have you been a good boy for your mum and Aunt Susan and Gran? I hope you have. If you're a good boy I promise to have Santa Claus give you an extra present for Christmas.

Your mum said you was wanting a letter because I've been bad and haven't written to you in a while. It's been a busy time and your daddy's had a lot of school classes to go to just like you. Even when you're all grown and big, some times you still have to go to school. Learning makes you wise and smart tho' and being wise and smart is important.

I still got your tin soldier with me. He has a special pocket in me jacket that Uncle Danny made for me. We've took to calling him Patrick after Saint Patrick because Saint Patrick was a great hero. If you go round the firehouse with your mum you can ask Mister Reddington to tell you the story of Saint Patrick.

We're leaving tomorrow on our ship. Our bosses haven't told us where we're going but it will probably be some where far away and exciting. Farther than your uncle James has gone with the Navy and he has gone almost to the bottom of the world. It will be a long trip and we have to wear silly yellow life jackets around our necks all of the time in case we get clumsy and fall over the rail into the sea. Your daddy will never do that of course because firemen never fall off solid ground like that.

I have to stop writing now because they're gathering up every body's letters so they can be sent off. Be sure to give your mum and Aunt Susan and Gran an extra hug and tell them you love them. And of course be a good lad and don't bunk off from school.

Many hugs and love,

Daddy
