9th October 1942
USS Ulysses S. Grant

Hiya, Mal,

I know I said I'd write first chance I had but didn't. It's been pretty crazy. We're packed all in this ship like sardines and sure the boys all smell like sardines too. Every poor fool has been seasick since we sailed. Except me and Danny, mind. It ain't so bad being away to sea but we had a storm a day or two after we sailed and that was a bit rough. Some of these boys don't half like complaining neither. It'd almost put Freddy and Bill to shame I think. Well. Freddy anyway. Bill ain't been so bad since Connie went.

How are the boys, anyway? I can't think that work has dropped off just because of the war. That little pest Harry Downey and his gang must still be around? The last I'd heard the police had almost caught them all but you're better off betting on horses instead of them. If they've burnt down any more cars they deserve the thumping of their lives. Maybe Bill should do some asking around about it because he's always been good at finding things out.

Kat's written to say me ma's not fit to be working any more and there's been no new news about James or Francis or Patrick. It's been going hard on Ma since we all joined up and it's just her and Kat and Susan there in the house, with Mikey and little Peg too. Peter is coming home next month too and I'm not sure how good that will go on account of what he's like. If you and some of the boys could stop in every now and then to see they're all OK, I think they'd be glad for it. It's also going to be Christmas soon and I promised Mikey I'd have Santa give him an extra present if he was good. Can you or Freddy go pick him up some toy soldiers at McGinnis's shop? Freddy owes me ten bucks from our last poker game so he can make good that way.

Hell. We're having a life boat drill now. If this tub went down I don't think hardly any body would make it up to the deck never mind to a life boat. There's too many of us crammed in on board here. Tell the boys I said hiya and tell Gerry he's still a jerk but I promise not to thump him for stealing me helmet on that last run we was out on before me and Danny left.

See you, pal,

Joe
