Darling Joe,

Happy Thanksgiving, my love. We've had a rare day of it here. I don't know how he managed it but Peter got a hold of flour, sugar, and some other things for us, so Susan and I spent all morning in the kitchen getting up a passable dinner. James went to the firehouse yesterday to invite the boys around, since they're the off-shift today and most of them came with their families. It might have been too many people but they brought what they could for dishes so there was enough for everybody. Freddy made two of his apple pies, though I'm not sure where he got the ingredients for them, and Gerry brought some of his uncle's beer. We had to use the front room to sit everybody but it was quite a merry time. Your ma was as lively as I've seen her in ages. I think it did her good to have guests to play hostess over. It was grand to see her enjoy herself so. You'd have been pleased.

The cleaning up is finally done and the boys have finally gone. Freddy and Bill stayed behind to help and Bill's daughter played with Mikey and Peg. Getting them to say goodbye was not easy! We've got enough food left over to last us a while, because the boys insisted on not taking it all back, bless them. You know I don't care much for charity but I'm grateful to them all the same. Susan and I have decided to do their washing free until the New Year. It's only fair and purses are tight for everybody, even them. Mikey has taken it on himself to visit the firehouse every day after school too. He hasn't told me what he gets up to there but I think he's coping with you being away and Mal being gone in his own way.

I hope your Thanksgiving has been good too. We're all missing you and hope you and Danny are both well. Next week I hope to get a Christmas box sent for you. Mikey has already gotten a bunch of things for it. James has been helping him. Those two have become good friends. It's helpful to them both, I think.

The baby is giving me a belly now. Mikey thinks it's the strangest thing and is always surprised that a little person could be in there. He'll be a good brother though. But I have to end here, I'm afraid. Beth and I work the next three nights at the Grove. It's been busy there lately. I'm doing all right with it for now but I'll have to give it up soon.

All my love,

Kathleen
