29th September 1942
USS Ulysses S. Grant

Dearest Kat,

Your letter (No. 4) came in just in time. We're sailing tomorrow, once the last of the convoy ships gets loaded up. There's a lot of talk but no body knows for certain-sure where we're going. The lads are a good bunch tho' and I think we'll do all right where ever we are sent. It's a relief to be on the move really. Kicking our heels in camp wears thin so we're all happy to be setting off soon.

Tell Mikey I do still got that tin soldier. He's got a special pocket in me jacket. Danny sewed it up for me. So the wee fella goes with me every where except when I haven't got me jacket which ain't that often now we're onboard ship.

It's fair tight quarters on account of so many lads being onboard. I swear they've tried to fit the whole regiment in one. Our barracks is one big long room with narrow canvas bunks slung four or five tall. We got about a foot and a half of space between bunks which ain't that much and our duffels and rifles and other gear has to fit in there somehow too. Lads are always climbing up and down or shoving past each other in the aisles which ain't very wide. There ain't much quiet or privacy but we're fair used to that by now.

I ain't had any fights with any of the lads since me last letter so don't be worrying over it. Seems most of the boys have figured out it's best to leave well enough be but some times they needs reminding. Every body is too excited to be getting moving to sea to want to scrap much tho' so there hasn't been no trouble much in a couple days.

Make sure Ma don't get the idea to sneak around Healy's orders because that'd be like her. She ain't ever known when to let well enough be. Has there been any news of Francis and Patrick and James? That'll be a bad cause of worry for her especially on account of James. Ma won't be easy until he's home. He was always her favorite. Tell her to ask Healy to do some official inquiring. That'll help I think.

How's it being at the Grove? Me and the lads went down there once and it was a good time. Danny's been reading over me shoulder and says you chose good for a place to work at. He knows the manager he says so next time you're in there, tell him Sully says hiya.

I'll get a letter out for Mikey now. Make sure he keeps to his schooling because I'll be damned if he settles for being a fireman he's too smart a lad for it.

Love always,

Joe
