Dearest Kat,
Still no word about when we'll be able to send out any mail but a lot of the boys have been writing letters like crazy so hopefully soon we'll get told to pass our letters up to the censors. I just came down from being on deck and what a heavenly change it was to be up in the open air even tho' it was only for a half-hour. The stink down here hasn't got any better even tho' a bunch of the lads have started getting over being sea sick. Water is still being rationed and some of the boys have been saying the soup they serve us for lunch is made with salt water and piss and I think I believe that because the stuff tastes so bad. It's still food tho' and not eating it because of it tasting bad is fair stupid but a bunch of the boys have been skipping their meals any way.
I've spent most of me time on me bunk playing cards with Danny or sleeping because there ain't much else to do. A couple of the lads have got a little mouthy from being bored and try to pick fights but they shut up fair quick when me or Danny gets up. I ain't had a scrap here yet and I ain't looked for any really but I ain't gonna back down from one neither. It shouldn't mean any trouble if it's over fast any way. You can't be mad at me for thumping some body who stirs trouble up first I hope.
I just wrote a letter to Mal asking him and the boys to stop by regular on account of Ma and all of you. It's been hard for every one and when Peter gets out of prison I think it will be worse because he's never known how to keep himself straight. I wrote to him too warning him to behave himself and that the boys from the firehouse have been visiting regular and know to watch out for him. I hope it all won't go bad. Jack and Ned will meet him when he gets out and Jack won't put up with any thing. He's the one who arrested Peter way back. They'll probably keep an eye out too. You and Ma and every one will be well looked out for.
The only thing I don't like about being at sea is not having any mail. It's been a regular grouse of mine lately but it's enough to drive a fella crazy not getting any letter or any thing. I want to know you and every one are doing all right. How is Mikey doing in school? Has he been behaving? How's Ma? Is she still taking it easy? Are you still doing all right with the laundry business and working at the Grove? That is a hopping and busy place and it can get kinda rough. If any body there gives you trouble tell Mal and the boys and they'll take care of it.
Danny says I'm worrying worse than an old woman and I've belted him for it. Sorry. I know. You said no fighting.
Love always,
Joe
