Darling Joe,
There was a fire in Maverick Square on Saturday. Malachi Reddington's been killed. I don't know any gentler way to say it. The newspapers were filled up with it yesterday and today. It's such a terrible thing. When Patrick heard about it, he went straight down there to help. He hasn't told us anything about what it was like and I don't think he will.
I went over to the firehouse this morning with Mikey. I think it helped the boys. We're going with them tomorrow for Mal's funeral. Mikey cried for an hour when I told him what had happened, the poor lamb. He liked Mal a lot. I know you two were good friends too. I took a clipping from The Post about it and am sending it along.
I'm sorry for such an unhappy letter.
All my love,
Kathleen
